NVQ Assessors help individuals gain NVQ qualifications. They assess and monitor learners against the relevant occupational standards by directly observing the learner at work, checking a portfolio of written evidence or other methods. They provide feedback to the trainees, and offer advice if the standards are not met.
Internal verifiers are designated to carry out quality checks on the work of NVQ Assessors to ensure assessments are fair and consistent with the assessment criteria
External verifiers visit NVQ centres to ensure the assessment process is carried out properly.
NVQ ASSESSORS
You will need to gain a qualification called A1/A2 (previously known as D32/D33) and also be occupationally competent in the area you wish to assess. You do not have to have completed the NVQ that you are assessing, although it can be useful if you have. You can get your Assessor’s Award in your own time at a local college or training provider or through your employer. Candidates must have access to at least two NVQ candidates to assess.
The A1 is a certificate in assessing candidates using a range of methods and the A2 is a certificate in assessing candidates' performance through observation. These replace the former Training and Development Lead Body (TDLB) assessment qualifications D32 and D33. More and more employers are employing Assessors who do not have their A’s or D’s and choosing to train them up for the qualification once they have been employed. This is because they feel that their occupational competency and background is more important. An assessor must have a minimum of two years experience of carrying out the work in which he/she is required to assess and must achieve assessor unit A1 within 1 year.
The Assessor course covers:
• Assessing candidates using a range of methods
• Developing plans for assessing competence with candidates
• Judging evidence against criteria to make assessment decisions
• Providing feedback and support to candidates on assessment decisions
• Contributing to the internal Quality Assurance process
• Assessing candidates performance through observation
Internal verifiers must hold an assessment qualification and also verification unit V1 (Conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process). V1 replaces the former TDLB internal verification qualification D34.
External verifiers must hold A1, V1 and also V2 (Conduct external quality assurance of the assessment process). V2 replaces the former TDLB external verification unit D35.
