Interview Technique 

Interviews are your chance to shine! Be positive and well prepared and you will.
Here are some general guidelines to help you succeed.

Preparation

Preparation essentially takes two forms:

• the logistical arrangements for the interview;
• information gathering prior to the interview.

Logistical Arrangements

• Ensure you know the time, date and location of your interview. Additionally the names and positions of the people you will be meeting - check pronunciation if necessary with the receptionist.
  
• if you're not certain of the location most companies have directions which they can forward to you. Alternatively make a journey beforehand to check out their location and the approximate time the journey takes.
• On the day leave yourself plenty of time and only take with you what you need.

Information Gathering

• Find out as much as you can about the company. Company brochures, annual reports and websites are very useful.
• Study the job specification and note suitable skills and experience that you possess.
• Try and anticipate potential questions and prepare answers. These are likely to cover areas such as your technical expertise and personal attributes and achievements, but may also include questions about why you are applying to the company and your specific suitability to the role.
• Prepare questions for them to answer in relation to both the company and the role itself. Open ended questions are best (eg How...? What...? Why...? etc.)

The Interview

An interview is a two way process. For it to be successful the potential employer must like you and vice-versa. This is an important point, so remember it is not just you that can be questioned and assessed on the day.

For you to create a favourable impression at interview consider the following:

• Dress smartly, be courteous, on time, positive and to the point - avoid waffling!
• Use appropriate body language - maintain eye contact, offer a firm handshake and smile! Avoid slouching, fidgeting and crossing your arms.
• Ensure that you answer the question. If unsure about what is being asked, ask for clarification before answering.
• Make use of the preparation you have done. Mention your attributes and achievements - these should be relevant to the potential employer and the role on offer.
• Be specific in supplying evidence and examples to back up your statements . The use of numbers also helps to quantify results achieved.
• Do not aggressively criticise previous employers or colleagues. It is unprofessional and creates a negative image.
• At the end of the interview reiterate your interest in the company and opportunity and thank them for their time.

Try and enjoy the interview and do not expect to get offered every position you go for. However, if you are unsuccessful try and learn from your experiences, ask for feedback and then take appropriate action so that you are better prepared and more confident about your next interview. Good luck!
